GEMSTX First Generation Instructions.
Plug-in. When dial is turned the LCD illuminates with temperature. Temperature increases when turned to the right. Stopping at any point sets temperature. When dial stops, readout indicates the current temperature then moves toward the set temperature.buttons

GEMSTX Second Generation Instructions.
Plug-in. Five clicks on-off button turns on and off. Temperature resumes last temperature set. Sets desired temperature by using the plus or minus buttons. Fahrenheit and centigrade can alternate by one long click on the on-off button.

GEMSTX automatically turns off after one hour.

  1. Unscrew tip with the GEMSTX wrench.
  2. Turn crank wheel to withdraw crank to its full length.
  3. Stand GEMSTX upright onto its wheel.
  4. Attach the GEMSTX funnel to the open heat chamber. Insert material, only adding small amounts at a time.
  5. Use the poker connected to wrench to gently compress material, adding small amounts until the chamber is full to the desired amount. Leave at least an inch of empty space near the tip. Insert small stick, push material against the core and leave a small hole in the middle. This lets rosin move.
  6. Before each use align metal filter, the wire mesh, and the paper filter in center of tip.
  7. Setting GEMSTX’S Temperature: 100 C. is a good starting point. Lower temperatures create lighter and harder rosin and the reverse is true for hotter. Adjust as necessary for desired results. Keep GEMSTX upright.
  8. You can connect tip or wait observe material, restirring or adjusting the material as necessary. After 4-5 minutes, when starting to liquefy, close the tip. Gently turn crank wheel a small amount, compressing until you can feel the material move toward the tip, until you feel a little back pressure. Use wrench, make sure the nut is tight. Set GEMSTX on its stand and place in on the pad.
  9. Be patient. Let rest for some time. Do not press dry material against the filters. Flowers or herbs will take much longer to liquify. Fresh material may have water or vapor first; be sure to raise temperature above 100 for wet and wait for water to be expelled. Compressive forces and time will be greater than with concentrates. Allow water to be released before rosin begins dripping.
  10. Rosin may begin dripping. Begin compressing material by turning crank handle. If difficult wait. If no flow happens wait… turn crank again until movement stops… then wait. Proceed by repeating (according to material characteristics) as rosin flow increases until pressure is no longer being released by waiting. Stessing the crank wheel without movementis an indication you are finished. If something has gone wrong you can open again and break up the plug or simple push it back into the chamber. Let GEMSTX stand for several minutes as the last of the rosin slowly drips out. Unplug GEMSTX when finished. Note: GEMSTX will automatically shut off after 1 hour.
  11. Wipe rosin off tip. Relieve pressure on tip by turning crank wheel out until turning is easy. Use wrench to remove warm metal tip. When tip is loose – remove by hand. Wipe off. Turn crank wheel back in to expel plug of waste material. Reposition screens and center GEMSTX filter paper and you are ready to concentrate again!

ATTENTION CAUTION HAZARD

BEFORE REMOVING HOT TIP-NUT TURN CRANK WHEEL OUT SEVERAL TURNS TO ALLOW PRESSURE TO BE RELEASED WITHIN HEAT CORE. IF DIFFICULT TO REMOVE TIP, CONTINUE TO OUT TURN CRANK UNTIL TIP NUT UNSCREWS EASILY. FAILING THIS THE WASTE PUCK MAY BE EXPELLED. HANG ON TO THE WRENCH TIGHTLY.

INFORMATION

Lower temperatures create extracts with a higher solid to liquid ratio. Notice the changing nature of the output throughout the process. Adjust temperature so you produce your desired output. Flowers: Pack loosely; grind it, pull apart, press it in, make a hole in the center of the material – let the material get hot before you wind. Pressing fiber will require much more effort than with other materials. Concentrates: Roll into cigar shaped pellets and insert or use wrench & poker for powders.

INTERNAL CLEANING

If O-ring fails rosin will get behind the plug. Turning will be sticky and rosin will be visible on the crank when out.

TO CLEAN: Wind-in crank until you remove hydraulic plug from rod tip, then withdraw crank all the way back out. Clean rod with alcohol and use cotton tipped swap to wipe the chamber and nut threads.

Occasionly clean the o-ring and plug with alcohol and keep the threads clean during repeated extractioins

Cartridge filling tip technique

THE BEST DIY CART FILLING EXTRACTOR

Included with GEMSTX’s newest version is a cart-filling-tip and several Teflon tubes. The lengths you use will depend on the kind of cartridge you are using, but. If your length is too long, oil can cool or other problems and filling will become less manageable. You will want to cut the hose to its minimum length to do your cartridge filling. This fosters control.

SQUEEZE TO FIT

After you have filled the chamber normally and screwed the tip on tightly, securely place a hose on the end of the nozzle. Let GEMSTX get to set temperature 110 C. before you do anything else. Hotter temps make the oil more liquid and usable in a cart. Do not get too hot, you’ll learn, to keep the tastes best. Waiting a few extra early minutes will make for a more consistent extraction. Be ready with extra carts or a pad to catch what is left over from the first output. When moving it around, please remember the HEAVY HOT CART CAN FALL OFF the tube so try not to let gravity do it by accident. With short lengths and small carts you can use the stand and extract OR you can rest GEMSTX on the table and observe.

After sometime you will notice signs of vapor and heat accumulating on the plastic hose at that point you can begin the extraction by turning the handle until you encounter back pressure – then stop. Wait a few more moments and turn gently a few times, slowly progressing and repeating until you see the appearance of extract in the tube and the filling begins. You can add a little heat to the glass cart so the oil will flow instead of cooling on contact.Carefully move the tube and heat the glass gently to help the rosin fill the cart equally. When you withdraw the tube there will be room left in the cart so withdraw slowly and fill the hole it leaves.

Several things to watch out for is oil cooling in the tube. I wish it wasn’t true but that will cause problems. So  if this happens until you get your technique together (I wish it was not so but) have your small torch or lighter nearby to apply a little heat to the Teflon tube and material will liquefy again. The use of heat is recommended to erase any delays you made during extraction. It will get the oil flowing again. Teflon requires a lot of heat to burn but the tip of the Gemstx body will melt so be careful.

It won’t take long to fill the cartridge. If you’re doing more than one, quickly slip the new one in place of the filled one. Do it quickly and expect to have a little oil in route, but you can time your squeeze so the extract is not flowing when you do that and your technique will be faultless.

When finished remove the tube and wipe it clean while it’s still warm (alcohol works) and squeeze out, or push out with a stick any hard material. Extra tubes are available on this web site. Wipe off the tip, the threads, and the top of the cylinder above the o-ring and you’re ready to go again. Put the tips on your cartridges and be happy no worries.
